My dog Ollie is a beautiful Pyrenees and border collie mix. She is a rescue that we fostered and subsequently adopted. She is also a chubby dog. We quickly learned how to help dog lose weight.
Ollie came from a severe hoarding case out in Oklahoma. She was among many other dogs getting by on scraps to survive.
We could only surmise that when she had a chance to get something to eat she quickly ate it.
We also discovered that she will eat as much as you feed her quickly. I guess she thought every meal was her last. We had to figure out what the appropriate amount to feed her in learning how to help dog lose weight.
Ollie also has mobility problems. When we fostered her she was sent to the vet to have her knees operated on. It unfortunately didn’t do much good. The poor dog has two positions: 1) she stands and 2) she lays down. She cannot sit.
She also runs like a rabbit. Her two rear legs move together when she runs. She walks just fine but her running is hard for her.
All this to say is that she doesn’t get proper exercise. She runs as she can but she doesn’t spend time ripping around the yard with the other dogs. It’s just to hard on her.
So along with giving her proper food she has gotten chubby. How to help the dog lose weight has been difficult on Ollie and us.
The first thing we have done is prepare food that fills her up but is not-fattening. We give her a small cup of nutritional dog food and pour a blended mix of low to no calorie green vegetables like green beans and kale. We also mix in some broth.
This is how we prepare the green vegetable slurry for the dogs.
- Take three bags of vegetables. One bag of frozen green beans, a bag of frozen spinach or kale and a bag of green peas. We dump the vegetables in an Instant Pot.
- We pour a cup of water in the pot.
- This slurry cooks for 20 minutes.
- With an immersion blender we puree the mixture.
- Refrigerate and use as needed. They’ll love it and it will fill them up quickly.
Ollie thinks she is getting more than she really is. It is filling and healthy.
We pour her dog food in a dish that forces her to slow down when she eats. You’ve all seen those whacky plastic dishes that look like a maze. She is easily able to eat every morsel but she doesn’t eat too fast.
Giving her special low fat dog food is expensive. But if you want to know how to help your dog lose weight it is almost a necessity.
We also give her a special dog food that is not only healthy but also helps with her joints. This special blend of food is a prescription. It so expensive but it seems to help with her mobility as well as her weight.
Ollie loves her snacks. Unfortunately for her is she only gets weight loss for dogs treats. We don’t give her a lot during the day. She gets one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon.
She loves being outside so she will miss the morning snack more times than not.
We also will give the dogs a snack if we are leaving.
Filling a frozen kong with fruits and vegetables is another way to provide them with snacks. It take a while for them to dig the snack out and is healthy.
Ollie and our other two adopted dogs get walked after they have their supper. They enjoy getting on the leash and sniffing around to see what the other neighborhood dogs have been up to.
Obviously exercise is key to how to help a dog lose weight. Our dogs can play outside in the fenced in back yard any time they want to. More times than not they are sleeping in the sun. But sometimes Ollie will roam around the perimeter backing at who-knows-what.
How to help dog lose weight is something that every pet parent may eventually have to do. The obvious thing is to make sure they get plenty of exercise. The other part is to make sure they are eating healthy and not too much. Only healthy portions and snacks for your chubby pooch.
